It’s official: I’m excited.

This week is packed with arty goodness. I just finished hanging a show on monday and I’m hanging my second show this week tomorrow. The opening of Double Entendre is on Friday night, and I’m keen as mustard to hang the art and show off my latest round of paintings. This little beauty will be on display, along with it’s painting cousins.

Not only am I exhibiting mixed media works, but I’ve unleashed my latest digital art series from Geline.com.au. There will be prints on wood, acrylic, aluminum and tile as well as some tampered prints. I’ll post photos soon, but I really have to hold off just a couple more days until the exhibition because there’s nothing better than a good surprise.

I went out today and spent my life savings on a dress to wear to the show. When I say my life savings, I mean it quite literally. This was one impulse buy… But at least I’ll be feeling purty. Maybe I should start a new website, ‘art for my wardrobe’.

Of course, if this week’s special gets snapped up before I have a chance to hang it, I’ll have to find another one. Oh, the fun of having simultaneous projects…. Speaking of simultaneous projects, artist by artist is also hanging at the Noosa J at the moment. Opening for that one will be November 3. There are a lot of fantastic artists that were involved in this project, so come along to meet them.

Welcome to this week’s special. I’m been playing expressively with my favorite mediums. I figured since I work expressively, and since I work in mixed media, I would label my work Expressive Mixed Media. At least for the meantime, until I decide something else.

I feel comfortable with the term ‘Expressive’, but not expressionist. That term to me belongs to something else, and to another time. I don’t belong to that time. Also ‘Expressionist’ sounds too macho to me, while ‘Expressive’ sounds feminine. It’s like back in the 50′s and 60′s (or whatever dates they were) they tried to stick the label on Pollock , Gorky, Hofmann and Graham and they were like “no way dude, that sounds girly. put a manly ‘ist’ on the end”.

Of course this painting is a little street, a little gallery, and a lot of me. I had a lot of fun with this one. So much so, that I decided to resin the piece for that ooh-so-glossy feel. And I got to sneak a little humour into it, which is part of what makes the world go round.

I had a blast with this painting. It’s rare that I paint a man. I prefer to paint women for all sorts of reasons. But this painting wanted to be a man, so what else could I do? I really do love to mix the loose sketching with the slower painting…

I called him ‘Rock Star Historian’ because be looks like a character from history, yet he has this lowbrow thing going on. To me, lowbrow is about as hipster as you can get, almost more hipster than a rock star. Although most rock stars would throw up in their mouth just a little bit about that comparison. Accept it! Take it like a man, hipster!

Let’s play a little game.

I’ve put a lot of love into this lot of paintings. Can you guess where exactly I’ve put the love? If you guess correctly I will give you a thumbs up, and you will gain the satisfaction of knowing you were right. Nothing beats that kind of satisfaction. Except maybe the satisfaction of knowing somebody else was wrong.

Well folks, I’ve done it. I’ve decided to put a new painting on the specials!

This is exciting. It means that unless I change my mind (and it’s been known to happen on many occasions) from this week forth, I’m putting new work on the line. Usually I like to let the work sit in the studio and breathe, to see if I want to paint over it. But I like the idea of presenting new work to the public, fresh out of the studio. It’s more raw.

Lately I’ve been trying to get out of my head and into the moment more. In my life as well as in my work. I find that I over-intellectualize most things. That includes anything from grocery shopping, what to wear, how to paint and of course, matters of the heart. Putting the work up straight away allows for less thinking time which in my case, can only be a good thing. So off you get, new painting! Stop pestering me for change.

This week’s piece is from a new series I’ve been working on. It brings together all of the things that I love: collage, spray enamel, pencil drawing, oil, acrylic, oil pastels, washes, line, shape… It’s all in there. You’ll see more of this style now because this is what I’m loving doing right now. The size is small enough to ship anywhere easily so don’t be shy.

I’m very excited about this, so enjoy!

I was just about to go to bed, feeling quite sleepy but with an overwhelming sense that I was missing something important. When it hit me. The Weekly Rent Special! Thank goodness I got organized a little while back and set aside this week’s beauty.

Sticking with my favorite theme, here is one more mother and child. This one is called ‘mother and child 4′, painted when my son was 4, and just in case you forget, I’ve put it on the T-shirt. This painting is from my brighter palette days, when I was obsessed with cerulean blue and aquamarine. I was trying to save money, so I switched to painting on boards. Then I figured out that I have to pay for framing and the whole idea went out the window.

The painting reminds me of the birth of Venus, except in a sagging breasts, single mum sort of way. I love the look on the boy’s face because it’s exactly the kind of look that my boy would give – a little dubious of the person speaking, and probably about to say something smart and unexpected.

With a good frame, this painting would look amazing it it’s new home. Please only locals for this painting, because I can’t ship a big painting on board for cheap.

Jade Buddha

I was really struggling with the decision of what to put up for this week, so I left the decision up to my sister Ramona. She has chosen Jade Buddha. It used to be called Buddla-3, but that was impersonal. This Buddha said “hey, I’m more than just a number!” So I caved in and changed it.

In 2009, after the Spanish series, I was toying around with finding my ‘thing’ to paint. At the time I was living in Eudlo, in a lovely home just a short drive from the  chenrezig buddhist institute.  My landlord was a buddist and there was a whole lot of Buddha talk going around. So it seemed only natural to start putting some paintings together which reflected this. I think this painting is actually a Thai Buddha. The Thai one made a better stencil than the round Tibetan one.

That reminds me of a bumper sticker I got my step dad for his birthday: “I’m got the body of a God…. Buddha!”

This piece reminds of a time when things where more calm. There was more time for tea to brew, plants to grow and long country drives. It’s nice every once in a while to slow down. But that time is definitely not now for me!

Sometimes I start a painting knowing exactly what I want to achieve, including subject matter and style. Other times, I have no clue. I don’t think about it, I don’t intellectualize it, I just paint. This painting was done on such an occasion.

When this happens I feel liberated by the shackles of academic study and free from my own mind. It’s not easy to escape years of learning about art. As Picasso said, “It took me four years to paint like Raphael, but a lifetime to paint like a child”. Now, I can’t paint like Raphael, nor do I aspire to that. But you get the gist of it.

Which brings me to another question. Since I paint in so many different styles, which one do I feel is the most natural to me? Short answer: it depends on the day and the mood. Last week soft drawings took my fancy. Today I’m a bit flat, so I would probably take to the collage side of my work. Something about the blahs and paper-tearing go together all too well. Tomorrow if I wake up full of beans it will be a day for splashing bright paint. We’ll see.

I really didn’t think I would be putting this one into the special. However, my desire to have the studio clean-out supersedes my common sense at this time. Especially when I consider the cost of framing ‘Just a Girl’. It has a beautiful frame with glass, so pick up only for this one. It’s way too heavy to ship.

I can’t remember whether I painted this one before or after Mags. I really tried to remember. I meditated, I visualized… but I can’t remember a darn thing! Ok I use the term ‘meditate’ very loosely here. it was more like I momentarily paused as I was writing this. Let’s play fair and call it a micro-meditation.

This piece mixes painting, stencils, collage and drawing. You can see a theme here with the tools I like to use, however different the pieces might end up looking from each other.

I can’t write much today because I’m battling a terrible cold that’s making me want to sleep all day long. So off to sleep I go.

Here’s one that not many have seen. It’s the sister painting to Mags 1, which no longer exists. So really it doesn’t have a sister anymore. It’s a lone ranger painting in need of a new home.

This is when i first started playing around with mixing acrylic, oils and enamel. It was straight after the Spanish series and before the Russian dolls, so you might be able to see some of both influences in this one. It’s what I call a ‘crossover’ piece. One that teaches me something new, or which allows me to have an “aha” moment.

This painting in particular was inspired by some knitting magazines. A knitted tennis jumper, so be more exact. The end result had nothing to do with the inspiration, but it’s what I happened to be looking at before I painted it. If I were to name it now I’d probably go for something like ‘the writer’ or ‘she set her phone to give a fake ring in case things got uncomfortable’.

I used to never make sketches. I envied the artists on the subway doing sketches of passers by, drawing inconspicuously in a darkly lit corner. That seems so romantic. That seems like the way an artist should be working. But I’ve only done that a handful of times in my life, and that is when I was ‘playing the role’ instead of genuinely wanting to be doing that.

When I’ve out and about, I like to be doing what I’m there for. If I’m on the subway, I stare at people, daydream of missing my stop and ending up who-knows-where, or make faces at the kids. If I’m at a cafe, I like to read through the magazines that are there to get some insight at what the owner of the joint might be like, stare at the walls or play with the wobbly table. I don’t sketch in public.

I do, however, make sketches at home sometimes. Most of the time I just paint or draw straight onto canvas, but lately I’ve really been getting into the sketching.

Here are two of the drawings from the Russian Dolls series. One of these drawings is sold, and I still have the painting ‘no two are ever the same”.

And now, on to something different…

This piece is from the Pre-Russian dolls period. it’s what got me started on using collage in my paintings. You can barely see the paper coming through the painting, but it’s there.

The name doesn’t come from Marge Simpson, as you may think. It’s a much more practical answer. It’s short for ‘magazines’, an in the collage that I used. I’ve always been into op shopping, and I love the old knitting magazines from the 70s and 80s. You can find some real winners if you dig around. I used to collect them and make wrapping paper,  bind books and cover boxes with them.

They’re also really good for creating funny post cards.I might write on this one “Patty and Steve used to go for a round of tennis before heading off to a good key party”.
