Art For My Rent: Part II (it’s the 6th month anniversary!)

Six months ago I started the Art For My Rent project on a whim. It instinctively brought together various concepts that I had been toying with into one idea. But what exactly was that idea? Why do I keep calling this website an ‘art project’? What am I trying to achieve with this? These are all questions that I’m hoping to answer on a much deeper level.

In my journey to find my place in the art world (or create my place), I have struggled with some basic concepts. One of my strongest and most confusing struggles is my  resistance to branding and marketing. “But… isn’t this site based around a good branding concept?” some of you might think. On the surface, yes. But it underpins many concepts that I’ve yet to process. Concepts that I’ve written about briefly but haven’t thoroughly dissected, so that  they don’t make sense to me yet.

I need to make art. I need it like I need to breathe, and I can’t function properly if I don’t make art. This is my contribution to the world, as anything else feels like I’m not living up to my full potential. When I seek to make a living from my art and find that it’s nearly impossible, I have to question whether my contribution is of any value to the world. Just what is it that makes art of value to people, and to the world?

I like to think of myself as a spiritual and deeply connected person, even when locked away in my studio for long periods of time. When I talk about my contribution I see all the various parts that make the world go ’round working together, and this is my bit. If my bit isn’t working, than the whole thing is broken. I’m not talking about myself personally. I’m talking about the arts. I’m talking about the difficulty of artists trying to carve out their piece and be able to contribute to this world as they were born to do.

We all know that if you want to be an artist you have to create your own career, you have to “build it so they will come”. Call me juvenile, call me a dreamer, but I think that there’s a better way.

I’m perfectly aware that I’m ranting here. As I said, these struggles that I have are raw and unformed. This concept from the beginning has been raw and unformed. I’m the sort of person that does something instinctively and then things about it for ages until every little angle has been explored, and the whole memory is this tidy little package I can organize and file away as ‘having learned that’. I want to have learned this, and I’m open about not even being close to having it sorted.

Which brings me to the point of this post… It’s time to roll out Art For My Rent Part II.

I want to use the next six months as a time of reflection in which I discuss the project. Since I’ve picked up a few good tips, I hope to pass a lot of these on to other artists so that you can avoid some of the mistakes I’ve made and will let you in on what really worked!

To all of my buyers thus far, I’d like to give you my sincere thanks. Creating and exploring is something that I need to do, and it often results in having paintings in many different styles. I’m happy that these explorations have gone to happy homes. Not only have you scored an inexpensive art piece, but you are part of an ongoing art project that I believe is important in asking some pertinent questions about contemporary art culture. I hope that as the project begins to unravel, that you will see what an important part of the project you have been simply by purchasing a work of art.

Now, I still have to figure out just how I’m going to do this! Will keep you updated and keep writing. But most importantly… will keep MAKING ART!

I posted a different painting yesterday but (oopsy) I just realized that I had it reserved for something else. Oh no. catastrophe.

Here is one of my favorites to make up for it.

The cleanout is OVER!

Some got lucky. Some got a bargain. Some got a once in a lifetime opportunity.

If you’ve seen the intro video then you know that this project was mainly intended as a studio cleanout for works that I had sitting around the studio. I like to learn, and I like to always keep moving forward. I try new styles, and I try many. This means that I had many paintings in the studio that were in a different style and did not fit into a particular body of work, or exhibition. They are the forgotten paintings that I put on the specials. Some were large, some were medium and some were precious smaller works. Now, they’re gone (dramatic music here).

So I’m making new work!

In order to standardize the specials, I’ve made the decision to work in a set size. This will be 30.5 x 30.5 cm. I normally sell these for $400, and will be discounting to $360 for the weekly rent special. As my prices go up every year, this is still a great special.

Just wanted to let you all know what’s going on, and give you a rule book.

On a different none… If you have a fish and it swims on an angle, is that normal? It’s not a trick question. It’s for real.

Recent times are tough for art

I don’t know how to write this blog post without cursing, because honestly that’s all i’ve been doing for the last week. Maybe even longer.

Most people are aware of this to a certain extent, but let me tell you in no uncertain terms that trying to live off your art is not only difficult, but nearly impossible. Especially when I have worked for 6 months on an art exhibition and ended up selling $200 worth of work (for which I am very grateful). If somebody were to ask me at this very moment how the art thing is going, I would have to say “tough”. So tough that I’m contemplating going back to work. This is not a light decision. It’s one that I don’t want to be forced into making, but seeing as though rent is becoming increasingly difficult to cover, I see no alternative.

This week I’ve received a handfull of bills including electricity, car insurance, registration, phone, internet plus the costs of putting together an exhibition. Throw on top of that a melted head gasket from last week which will run me $1500 plus the cost of renting a car for the week… and you have yourself one empty bank account.

Don’t think for a second that this is a call for a pity party. I said from the beginning that I wanted to be open about the ups and downs of trying to make it. There are a lot of impressionable young people out there reading this blog. Nobody in art school is going to tell them about the difficulties of trying to earn a living with art. In fact, art schools have no place in their curriculum for any talk about money. It’s considered almost a sacrilege on the holy institution of art. As a result, I’m not a business person. I’m no good with numbers, and I certainly don’t have a head on my shoulders for business sense. I love art, and I love design, and I’m lucky enough to be able to make websites.

I’m giving you a heads up that as of  this week, I’m looking for design work. My eczema is flaring like crazy, which can only mean that I’ve given my body about as much stress as it can handle.

There are a lot of art projects on the horizon. Artist by artist is happening tomorrow at the Noosa J. After that, it’s travelling to the Gold Coast and will end up displaying for two days at the state library of Queensland. That’s pretty awesome! I’m putting some art into Incub8er Gallery in the Fortitude Valley, Brisbane. Also, I’m talking to a gallery in Sydney about a show next June, and in the process of organizing representation. I have travelling exhibitions, competitions, T-shirt launches, website launches, a new Etsy store, red bubble shop, countless blog interviews, collaborations, you name is I’m doing it.  So things are happening. It’s just that there is mo money happening.

yet.

I’ve been talking to other artists who have the same story. This seems to be plaguing the industry at the moment. It’s not a good time to be giving it a proper go. I knew this going into it, and I sure as hell know it now. Don’t even start to tell me that it’s bad times in Australia because I don’t believe it. But that’s another blog post.

It’s official: I’m excited.

This week is packed with arty goodness. I just finished hanging a show on monday and I’m hanging my second show this week tomorrow. The opening of Double Entendre is on Friday night, and I’m keen as mustard to hang the art and show off my latest round of paintings. This little beauty will be on display, along with it’s painting cousins.

Not only am I exhibiting mixed media works, but I’ve unleashed my latest digital art series from Geline.com.au. There will be prints on wood, acrylic, aluminum and tile as well as some tampered prints. I’ll post photos soon, but I really have to hold off just a couple more days until the exhibition because there’s nothing better than a good surprise.

I went out today and spent my life savings on a dress to wear to the show. When I say my life savings, I mean it quite literally. This was one impulse buy… But at least I’ll be feeling purty. Maybe I should start a new website, ‘art for my wardrobe’.

Of course, if this week’s special gets snapped up before I have a chance to hang it, I’ll have to find another one. Oh, the fun of having simultaneous projects…. Speaking of simultaneous projects, artist by artist is also hanging at the Noosa J at the moment. Opening for that one will be November 3. There are a lot of fantastic artists that were involved in this project, so come along to meet them.

But first, Friday night! October 28, 6 pm at the White Canvas Gallery in Fortitude Valley. Come say hello!

Welcome to this week’s special. I’m been playing expressively with my favorite mediums. I figured since I work expressively, and since I work in mixed media, I would label my work Expressive Mixed Media. At least for the meantime, until I decide something else.

I feel comfortable with the term ‘Expressive’, but not expressionist. That term to me belongs to something else, and to another time. I don’t belong to that time. Also ‘Expressionist’ sounds too macho to me, while ‘Expressive’ sounds feminine. It’s like back in the 50′s and 60′s (or whatever dates they were) they tried to stick the label on Pollock , Gorky, Hofmann and Graham and they were like “no way dude, that sounds girly. put a manly ‘ist’ on the end”.

Of course this painting is a little street, a little gallery, and a lot of me. I had a lot of fun with this one. So much so, that I decided to resin the piece for that ooh-so-glossy feel. And I got to sneak a little humour into it, which is part of what makes the world go round.

Thanks for checking in!

I had a blast with this painting. It’s rare that I paint a man. I prefer to paint women for all sorts of reasons. But this painting wanted to be a man, so what else could I do? I really do love to mix the loose sketching with the slower painting…

I called him ‘Rock Star Historian’ because be looks like a character from history, yet he has this lowbrow thing going on. To me, lowbrow is about as hipster as you can get, almost more hipster than a rock star. Although most rock stars would throw up in their mouth just a little bit about that comparison. Accept it! Take it like a man, hipster!

Let’s play a little game.

I’ve put a lot of love into this lot of paintings. Can you guess where exactly I’ve put the love? If you guess correctly I will give you a thumbs up, and you will gain the satisfaction of knowing you were right. Nothing beats that kind of satisfaction. Except maybe the satisfaction of knowing somebody else was wrong.

Yesterday I wrote a long beautiful blog post about this piece, but today when I woke up to have a look, it was gone!

I’m sorry to say that I’m just too cranky to write another this early in the morning, but I wanted to post the weekly rent special here. Especially since last week I was a day late and it did not go by unnoticed. :)

Artist by Artist: Pairing up artists to make a doco

A few months ago I put my hand up to participate in an ABC Open project, Artist by Artist. The project entailed pairing up artists of all different practices to make a documentary about each other. The aim was to get a documentary about an artist through a different artist’s eye. I was selected, along with 9 other artists on the Sunshine Coast, to take part. Participating artists include sculptors, writers, painters, photographers and mixed media.

The project started with a two day intensive film-making course, in which the ABC producers Natalija Brunovs and Solua Middleton taught us everything from script-writing to story boarding. By the end of the two days, we had met our partners, got to know them and had a ‘first-impressions’ story ready to go.

My partner was Lin Martin, a photographer/artist/scientist/Buddhist whose current work focuses on the minute detail of nature. Lin had a beautiful story to tell, and I wanted to give her documentary the utmost attention in order to really portray what her work is about. She has a very soft spoken, gentle nature about her and so the film had to reflect her personality and get to the core of her practice.

I have never made a documentary before, so there was a big learning curb. I really wanted to shoot most of the footage, so I took a plunge into shooting on the day, with the help of Natalija. Thank goodness she was there to help! I later got the help of my good friend Adam Erbacher from The Film Tree to learn video editing. Since I’m a graphic designer by trade, I’m pretty used to Adobe software so Final Cut Pro wasn’t that difficult. I actually really enjoyed learning the program! In fact, I have a big fat crush on making videos now. Here is the film I made about Lin:

Let’s not forget that just as I made a doco about Lin, she also made one about me. The most difficult part of this project was letting go and allowing somebody else to dissect us and write about us. I’m going to go ahead and go out on a limb and say that the majority of artists are a bunch of control freaks. Self included. So putting my hands up and saying, “go for your life” was tough. Nevertheless, I’m so happy that I found the Buddhist in me to help me let go of detachment and allow Lin to tell my story. She’s done a fantastic job:

Through this project, I have met some wonderful artists that live just around the corner from me in the beautiful Sunny Coast. I feel so blessed to be living and working in a community with so many gifted individuals! Meeting so many great artists makes me feel like there’s a large support network out there. It’s great to be reminded that although we may be hiding away in our little cottage studios in the bush, we’re in this together.

SPECIAL SCREENING NIGHT WITH GROUP EXHIBITION:

Come along to the Noosa J and meet the artists involved. We will be screening all of the documentaries, as well as hosting an exhibition of the participating artists.

Thursday November 3, 5.30-9pm
light refreshments provided
